The Surprise Ending
Day #6 of Fear, Trust and Learning to Tell a More Hopeful Story
You are on your path. You have not strayed.
You might be surprised to hear this. What you call “getting lost” is a path rich with insight. There is much that grows underneath the surface of the swamp. It is teeming with life unseen.
Mysterious occurrences are coming to a life you call your own!
Who does not love a good mystery? Who does not love the thrill of a fortuitous surprise? What if what we cannot see lies in wait to embrace us?
What if when your fears do come to pass and in that all is lost, all is forsaken moment —when there is nothing you can do or say to change things, a child suddenly sings a song or turns a cartwheel with such joy, you remember how it was to play and trust the world.
What if the terrifying villain in your life suddenly stumbles and trips, or someone anonymously farts, or giggles when things are supposed to be most dire and suddenly, the spell is broken?
What if the end of the world end with dancing and laughter and good food and a visit from old friends who remember you when you were younger and braver and more foolish and they love who you’ve become, as much as who you once were.
What if we imagine other endings to the fearful stories we’ve been telling ourselves?
What if we imagine and direct our energies, our hopes and our dreams to the possibility that goodness is present, that things might work out in ways we can’t imagine, that we are after all the storyteller in our lives.
We get to decide what happens next.
We live the story we imagine most vividly.
Why not make it a daring story, one we will want to tell future generations?
