Day #36 of Hilma af Klint and the Imaginary Possible

Beauty’s Power by Suzanne LaGrande ©2020

Watching a concert pianist, i realized that playing an instrument is a kind of dance and so is painting — the materials are different but both require embodied expression.

The emotional tone of the music is very much like the sensuous feeling of colors or the movement of lines and shapes on the page.

It is how the feeling or energies touch and affect the body and what is expressed in this interplay that becomes artistic expression.

This is why sometimes an artist can be technically excellent and yet forgettable

What makes a virtuoso is not technical perfection but how much an artist brings of themselves, their experiences, their particular emotional responses.

Why would an artist being willing to go to such intimate, and sometimes painful places?

Because, expression is ecstatic.

Because the our bodies, our souls, our minds want to dance, long to connect, to integrate, to make something new.

This is how we transform raw experiences into something of beauty.
